Bloomsburg Sweeps Pair in Softball
ELIZABETH CITY, NC—The Bloomsburg University softball team pounded out 16 hits in a 14-1, five inning victory over Elizabeth City State University and a sweep of its doubleheader on Thursday. The Huskies won the opener 8-0 in six innings.
The victories move Bloomsburg head coach Jan Hutchinson to within four of becoming the NCAA Division II all-time leader in career softball wins.
In the nightcap, the Huskies' Kristen Castano (Nanticoke/Nanticoke) went 2-4 with a career-high four RBI, while Tara Emery (Sunbury/Shikellamy) went 4-4 with two RBI and Courtney Rhone (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) went 3-3 with three RBI. In addition, Jennifer Davis (Center Valley/St. Patrick's-St. Vincent's) was 2-2 with three scored for the Huskies. Combined, the four players had 11 of the team's 14 hits. Senior Alyson Taylor (Jersey Shore/Jersey Shore) also had a two-run homer for the Huskies.
Bloomsburg got all the runs it needed in the first inning when it scored six times with Taylor capping the inning with her home run. The Huskies also tacked on three runs in the second, four in the fourth and one in the fifth.
Sheelin Fisher (Coplay/Allentown Central Catholic) earned the win by going five innings and striking out six.
In game one, the Huskies got all the runs they would need in the top of the first when Jennifer Miller (Muir/Williams Valley) walked, stole second, went to third on a pass ball and stole home. Bloomsburg tacked on three more runs in the third inning with Stacey Krupiewski (Trooper/Methacton) getting an RBI single and Jess Rosin (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) knocking in two runs with a double.
The Huskies added a run in the fifth when Kristina Tice (Port Jervis, NY/Minisink Valley) doubled home Missy Bachert (Coplay/Parkland) who had reached on error and put the game out of reach with three runs in the sixth inning.
Tara Reed (Williamsport/Williamsport) tossed a two-hitter for Bloomsburg striking out eight and not walking a batter.
Bloomsburg, 5-6, will play at Columbia Union on Friday.
